Lick Observatory
The observatory is at the top of Mt Hamilton (4200 ft). It is home to the Shane 3-meter Reflector that is used by many different astronomers from the University of California system for observing the solar system and galaxies. Shane 3-meter Telescope Building is open for self-guided tours of exhibits and viewing the telescope through a window.

Requirements
They advise bringing a jacket to keep warm. Parking is limited so please car pool, if possible.
Operating Hours
The Shane Gallery, a great place to view the 120-inch Reflector, is open 7 days a week from 10 am to 5 pm. The Visitor Center and Gift Shop are open from Thursday to Sunday from noon to 5 pm except on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christma
Schedule
There are free talks inside the dome of the 36-inch Great Lick Refractor at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 pm. From June to September, Lick Observatory invites the public to observe through both the 36-inch Great Lick Refractor and Nickel 40-inch Reflecting Telescope. Each evening, the program features two speakers and astronomers who present multimedia lectures on their research or topics of current interest. Tickets sell out early so use the contact information below to contact them in the Winter or Spring.

Directions
The road up to Mt Hamilton is steep and windy so drive carefully. Also, the road may be closed during the winter months due to snow. Visit the California Highway Information website and enter Hwy #130 for current conditions.
