ITINERARY

Enjoy the Spirit of Nature with an Expert-led Redwoods Hike

This morning, we head to Half Moon Bay to take a three-mile roundtrip hike with 430-foot ascent through towering redwoods and along Purisima Creek with the sounds of flowing water and needle-like redwood leaves softening our path. Our expert guide from Save the Redwoods League will teach us about the history of the area as well as the wildlife supported by redwood forests. We will keep our eyes out for banana slugs! On this mostly shady walk, we will see some areas where redwoods were cleared for sawmills. There were seven recorded steam-powered mill sites along the creek banks in this preserve. Redwood was used for shingles in the building of San Francisco after the Gold Rush, and for lumber for the development of Half Moon Bay. As you can imagine, traveling from the coast over the Santa Cruz mountains to San Francisco was a tough route on the twisting dirt road in wagons pulled by a team of horses! Traditional Indian Cuisine

For lunch, we enjoy the complex, nuanced flavors of a local Indian restaurant. There will be vegetarian and gluten free options. Flavorful Indian Food, photo by Anne Ferguson

Making Moonshine

Next we visit Jettywave Distillery to learn how they make their small batch distillates (bourbon, gin, vodka and moonshine). For example, their 90 proof fog fermented bourbon is composed of 80% organic Woodland sweet corn, 20% organic malted barley and Little Yosemite water. Literally they open-ferment the ingredients over five foggy days to slowly capture the grain's essence in reclaimed redwood fermenters. If you have never tasted moonshine, here is your chance. Juice shots, cocktails, beer and wine are also available. Distillation Process and Tasting, images by Anne Ferguson

During our tour led by the Head of Operations, we will see and learn about Jettywave's distillation process and about their business. Jettywave Small Batch Distillates, images by Jettywave Distillery
