BAO Lectures

Join us for educational lectures and build new neural connections! Lectures are 60 to 90 minutes including questions and answers. Please arrive 15-30 minutes early to enjoy healthy snacks and drinks and to socialize with other adults age 50+. Registration is required and space is limited, so please sign up as soon as possible using the registration button below. Once you register, we will send details about the meeting location and other important information.

Cybercrime is one of the fastest-growing areas of crime. In 2014, 47% of American adults had their personal information stolen by hackers. Increasingly criminals are exploiting the speed, convenience and anonymity of the Internet to commit a diverse range of crimes including scams, identity theft and tax refund fraud. In this seminar, a representative from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office will share real-life stories as well as suggest ways for you to protect yourself against cybercrime.

Lecture 4: The History of Moffett Field

Join a past P3 Orion pilot and officer of the Moffett Field Historical Society for a presentation on the history of Moffett Field. The presentation will examine the beginnings of the rigid airship era and its effect on the United States Navy's entry into lighter than air aviation. Sunnyvale was selected as the site of the Navy's largest West Coast airfield and the home of the USS Macon, the largest rigid airship ever built. We trace the progress of aviation from those early days of lighter than air aircraft thru the jet age as well as the NASA space program at Moffett Field and its affects on Santa Clara Valley. This presentation covers many enticing bits of interesting aviation history.

In the 1970’s, it was thought that dietary fat was the root of all evil and caused the growing epidemic of coronary heart disease and obesity in the United States. This started a low fat trend in the food industry. As it turns out, there are some fats that are important for a healthy diet. In this seminar we will discuss the complex role of fats in our body and explain how certain fats cause negative health effects.

San Jose author, Tobin Gilman, will give us an historical view of daily life and commerce in San Jose in the 1800’s, told through the prism of antique bottles from the area. You will learn about the downtown druggists, the local breweries, the soda and mineral waters, and much more. The glass bottles that San Jose's nineteenth century businesses used to package their products are spilling over with fascinating historical insights about the city's past that you won't learn anywhere else. Tobin will show us examples of antique bottles from San Jose, and explain how they were hand blown by skilled craftsmen in glass houses across the country. Attendees are encouraged to bring any old bottles they may have at home if they are interested in learning more about their age, history and value.
